History
It was Ruth Handler, wife of Elliot Handler (founder of the Mattel toy company) who had the idea to build an adult doll that until now existed only on paper. Indeed, the Elliot built Lili doll made of celluloid, earlier than Barbie, and may have inspired Ruth. She founded the faces and physiognomy of other dolls of the time too childish, so she decided to design a doll in three dimensions with a more adult look, able to provide the girls all dreams possible. The name Barbie was the nickname (short) of her daughter Barbara. Commissioned by the designer Jack Ryan, in 1958, it was officially launched at the Annual Toy Fair in New York on March 9 of 1959, and began to be sold for only $ 3. Currently, a model of the original doll is being sold for over $ 10 000.
