The Doll House - A Toy That Never Loses Its Charm

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Thanks to all the options in entertainment and technology today, I don't think doll houses are quite as popular as they used to be. Still, doll houses are found in the rooms of many little girls. Even if they don't spend as much time playing with them as some of their other toys, they are something that is treasured and can grow to have a special place in a little girls heart, especially when they have spent time designing and putting it together.

Dollhouses can be found in every style, including Georgian, Victorian and contemporary, You can buy dollhouses that are completely put together, but you can also buy dollhouses that you can build yourself, which are a little more challenging and may be a little more fun. This can provide a great way of spending time with your child. As you build the house, your child will learn not only about architectural design, but also about different elements of decoration and landscaping.

Once the house is all put together, the fun of decorating it begins. Your child can create the house with as much detail as she wants. The little family that lives in the doll house can be moved around from room to room as she pretends to understand what a family should be like.

The dollhouse provides a child with a way of practicing to be an adult, which is something all children love to do. With a dollhouse, your child will be creating a fantasy world that is much more a real experience than any video game can provide. A dollhouse can help her use her imagination as she makes up story lines for the dolls. Dollhouses are designed to be very highly detailed, with everything from the trees for landscaping to miniature books and cooking utensils.

The Victorian Doll house

Victorian dollhouses are very charming just like the full size houses built in the same style. Filled with personality, romance and elegance, each Victorian dollhouse has its own character. These doll houses are also a very popular collectors item.

Many years ago, Victorian dollhouses sometimes would serve as a teaching aid to show young ladies the proper way to behave and how to care for a home. Some Victorian doll houses were even large enough for the child to stand inside and learn how to perform the domestic duties that would some day be expected of her.

Whether it is a Victorian doll house or a modern one like a Barbie doll house, it is a way for little girls to be creative and have fun. It is also a good way for mothers to bond with their daughters as they help them decorate and even play sometimes.

Are You a Barbie Doll, Faded Beauty or Timeless Beauty?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Why do we as women go through so much to pain in order for men to look at us? I think that it is because we seek external approval to validate our existence. We feel that if we are perfect enough we will then be worthy enough to attract and keep true love, the perfect man who will adore and respect us. But the truth of the matter is no man is ever going to love and respect us more than we love and respect ourselves. Most women think of the perfect man as being wealthy and a perfect provider ... the Alpha male. Read the characteristics of the so-called-perfect-man, and then determine if you are a Barbie Doll, Faded Beauty or Timeless Beauty.

Alpha Male

Who are alpha males Hugh Hefner, Donald Trump, Michael Jordan famous wealthy athletes, movie stars. Show me a man who is wealthy and famous, and I'll show you a man who is 99.9% likely to be unfaithful in a committed relationship. The alpha male is the individual in the community whom the others follow and defer to. Humans and their nearest species-relatives, the chimpanzees, show deference to the alpha of the community by ritualized gestures such as bowing, allowing the alpha to walk first in a procession, or standing aside when the alpha challenges. Canines also show deference to the alpha pair in their pack, by allowing them to be the first to eat and, usually, the only pair to mate. The status of alpha is generally achieved by means of superior physical prowess. Listed below are some of the characteristics of the human alpha male.

o When a man is extraordinary wealthy it doesn't matter how physically attractive he is because his wealth is a babe magnet.

o Women will always throw themselves at men who are wealthy, successful, or famous in order to improve their standard of living.

o Most alpha males even when they are in committed relationships, will seek sexual intimacy outside of the committed relationship.

o Most alpha males have difficulty interconnecting sex, love and loyalty into one package.

o Alpha males generally believe that he deserves to have more than one woman.

o Alpha males not only collect expensive cars, guns, cigars and antiques, their collection also include sexual relationships with beautiful women.

o Having a bevy of beautiful women is encouraged and expected behavior of wealthy successful men.

Alpha males need Barbie Dolls in order to maintain their ultra masculine male dominate status in society. Barbie Dolls have the ultra female characteristics that compliment his superior status.

Barbie Doll Characteristics include:

o Barbie dolls are plastic. You must spend money on cosmetic surgery to maintain your youthful appearance at all cost. Implants, liposuction, rhinoplasty, breasts lifts, cellulite removal, botox injections, chemical peels and other techniques to maintain or obtain your outer appearance are necessary in order to compete for his affection and attention.

o Barbie dolls do not talk. Alpha men need a woman who is not going to complain about his long work hours, time that he spends with his "boys," his relationship with other women and his lack of participation in domestic matters.

o Barbie dolls smile all the time. The alpha male needs a woman who doesn't reveal her feelings of unhappiness in the relationship. She is going to smile when she learns that he has conceived a child outside of the committed relationship.

o Barbie dolls can be placed on the shelf when the alpha male is finished playing with her. When he falls in love with a younger, hipper, new model with fuller lips, he doesn't have to worry about the long term affects of breaking of her heart.

o Barbie dolls need and seek material accessories. The alpha male knows that as long as he is willing to buy her big, fancy homes, expensive cars and jewelry; he doesn't have to worry about being faithful and loyal to the relationship. Barbie dolls need a lot of expensive monetary upkeep. The alpha male has the money to give her whatever she needs because it validates his wealth and prestige.

o Barbie dolls can travel or move at a moment's notice. She has a travel case that comes with her because she does not have a career or goals that can not be sacrificed or thwarted for an alpha male. She changes locations based on the needs of the alpha male.

o Barbie dolls are always perfect and gorgeous, even naked. Alpha males need trophy wives and arm pieces to accompany them to fancy events. Dieting, exercising and maintaining an impeccable physical appearance is essential to remain attractive to the Alpha male. The Barbie doll's desirability is based on her ability to keep the alpha male sexually interested and satisfied due to the competition and availability of other dolls.

o The Barbie dolls youth and unchanging beauty is her greatest asset. She has a short shelf life. She must have as many children as quickly as possible to insure her financial future in old age when she is no longer attractive or able to reproduce.

o Barbie dolls don't ask questions. She is not going to question the alpha male about their future together, his assets or his Swedish bank account. She doesn't question pre-nuptial agreements because she knows that her time is limited in the relationship because she will not be able to compete with the newer models and editions that are marketed each year.

o Barbie dolls are hollow on the inside because they must have extreme low-self esteem in order to put up with the Alpha male's malarkey. The alpha male's presence in her life validates her external existence. She believes that her external, physical appearance is the depth of who she is.

Faded Beauty Syndrome

Have you ever noticed a woman who looks all of fifty-five, but is trying to look and act as if she is twenty-five? A faded beauty is a woman who feels and projects in her behaviors that her best years are behind her, and that her self-esteem and self-worth is based on her physical appearance and how she compares to other women. A faded beauty desperately holds on to her youthful beauty fearing that without it she is invisible. These are signs that you are a faded beauty.

o In high school, college or during your general youth you were considered to be the most beautiful and hottest girl around. The guys adored you and you could have any man that you wanted. Now that you have married and / or had children you feel frumpy, old and unattractive. Without your looks, you have no idea of who you are and where you belong in life. You spend most of your time thinking about how you use to look back in your heyday.

o You haven't changed your hairstyle, makeup, or style of clothes since you were seventeen-years-old. You psychologically compare yourself to younger women thinking to yourself how you could take there man, if you were 10 years younger.

o You wear heavy make-up to hide the bags under your eyes, the wrinkles and age spots on your face. You feel that without your make up you are unattractive, even when going for a walk or quick run to the grocery store or gas station.

o Your focus is completely on how you can improve or how you hate your appearance.

o You haven't learned anything new in the last ten years. You don't read books, you haven't taken any classes, and you don't volunteer your time. You are bored with your own life.

o If you talk to someone who had not spoken to you in 10 years, what would new things would you tell them about your life? If you have nothing new to talk about you are a faded beauty; not because of the natural changes in your physical body but because of the lack of changes in your contribution to this existence, even if it's trying a new recipe or taking a dance class.

o You don't like to leave the house because you don't look the way you did prior to giving birth to your children or simply gaining weight. Faded beauties think that their self-worth is nothing more than their physical appearance.

o You don't bother to buy new clothes or wear make-up, because you feel that you need to first lose weight or have cosmetic surgery before you can love and accept yourself.

Timeless Beauty

Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, Angelina Jolie, Barbara Streisand, Queen Latifah and Sophia Loren are a few of the women whom I consider to be ageless beauties. An ageless beauty is like wine, each passing year she becomes more beautiful than the previous year, not because of what she looks like on the outside; no matter how physically attractive she is, but because of who she is on the inside exudes class, charisma, compassion and personal integrity that is authentic and alluring. There is something special about her that is irreplaceable. Who she is... is so powerful and wonderful that she is beyond comparison to other women and methods of physical improvement.

Characteristics of Timeless Beauties

o They wear clothes that express their individual personality, soul and body.

o They mesmerize and captivate people with their wisdom, ideas, empathy and compassion for others.

o They are physically and psychologically irreplaceable. You can not put another body, face, or person in their place. Their personalities are dynamic and alluring and when they are gone they will be sorely missed.

o They are not "drama queens" or "divas" they are easy to get along with and are team players. They have a humbleness and humility about them that is breathtaking.

o They are not involved in intimate relationships where they are not honored and respected by their partners. They are either happy alone or in a committed relationship with a man who loves them unconditionally.

o She does not try to act or wear attire for a woman who is half her biological age. She looks healthy and enjoys being in her own skin and exudes an unexplainable beauty. She has interests, talents and abilities that she displays in a positive light. She enjoys volunteering and sharing her wisdom and life experiences with others.

o As she ages, her make-up becomes more subtle, not as a fashion statement but simply because she has learned over time that her true beauty can not be hidden underneath her make-up.

o She is not afraid to say no. She has learned to honor her time on earth. She is not a people pleaser and does not allow others to impose their requests on her time.

o She is confident in expressing her own opinions, ideas, and beliefs without worrying about offending others. She is confident and wise enough to accept and respect opinions that are different from her own without feeling threatened.

o You can't figure out why she is beautiful. She just is.

Make Him Commit - Or Else

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Are your ready to make him commit - or do you still want to just day dream about that special relationship? Are you ready to really make him fall in love, or do you just want to be friends? Distant friends? Could you use a little dating advice? I think so. We need to talk about how to make him commit.

We know how to attract men; we can get men to become our friends easily. But it can be a little different when we have that special one singled out as our soul mate. But he seems a little stand-offish. That needs to change. Try this.

Give him lots of sex. Hahahaha. You did not think we were serious, did you? I hope not. What happens when you and your boyfriend have sex? Male psychology indicates that this will have the OPPOSITE effect of what we are looking for. -How can that be?- you say. -He pressures me to have sex all the time.- you say. That may be true. But, the reality of that situation is that if you give in, he will probably lose respect for you. He will probably think that you are not the kind of person he wants to marry. -Is that fair?- you ask? No. But it is a fact. Having sex with a man will probably encourage him to lose interest in you.
Just be yourself. Hahahaha. We are joking about that, too. The fact is, being yourself is probably the worst thing you do. Now, before you become offended, let me assure you that this is true of the most interesting and most popular people you know. To prove it, try this. Think about the thing you enjoy most. Suppose it is scrapbooking. Now, go up to your 6 year old niece and start talking about scrapbooking. She will get bored, right? She wants to talk about her Barbie doll.

Now go up to your 92 year old grandma and start talking about scrapbooking. She will fall asleep. She wants to talk about healthcare and her aches and pains.

So, how would you hold their attention and make them want to spend time with you? Find out what they are interested in. When you find out that it is Barbie dolls and healthcare, talk about those things. Better yet, let them talk about those things. Ask questions to let them know that you are interested.

They will be eager to spend time with you again. So, what does your man like to talk about? Find out. Talk about that. Let him talk about that. Be the other person. You can be more attractive. You can make him fall in love. You can make him commit.

Bratz Rock Angelz - The Video Game

Image : http://www.flickr.com

MGA Entertainment, the creator of the Bratz toy line, has recently given the nod to the Bratz Rock Angelz video game, which was a rather obvious next step to take when you consider the Bratz exploding popularity. It's no surprise that countless children have decided to play as the teenage divas right from the comforts of their own home; there aren't very many games targeted for younger girls, much less one with subject matter with such widespread appeal.

The inevitable release of a Bratz Rock Angelz video game was expected by many Bratz fans worldwide (the Bratz dolls are equally or more popular than Barbie dolls in many countries around the world) since competitors like Barbie have experienced the transition to video games for quite some time. What some parents don't realize is the Bratz Rock Angelz video game is based upon a DVD movie of the same name, so children can enjoy two forms of media that work in conjunction with each other.

The story begins when Jade (of course, one of the Bratz girls), gets fired from her internship at a certain magazine (if you are a Bratz fan, you probably know that I am talking about the "Your Thing" fashion magazine). As a result of this unhappy incident, the Bratz Rock Angelz decide to start their own music and fashion magazine. It is up to you to help the girls achieve their goal. Better yet, you will have the chance to customize Jade's, Chloe's, Yasmin's and Sasha's hair, clothes and looks as you assist them in their fun quest.

The Bratz Rock Angelz videogame presents an isometric perspective view, just like the Sims saga of games, and has nicely designed graphics. Of course, a game about the Bratz Rock Angelz needs to be, at a minimum, as cool as the dolls, and I think the whole game has a hip vibe that will not disappoint any Bratz fan.

As the girls make their way towards their goal, they will have the possibility to complete a lot of small quests and mini-games, which allow you to customize the clothing, the shoes, the hair and a variety of other aspects of the Bratz Rock Angelz looks, including a lot of accessories. There are also some important items you will need to collect and several key locations you will need to visit in order to help the girls in the process of setting up their own magazine.

But the Bratz Rock Angelz are not alone! In fact, you will need to interact with several other characters from the Bratz dolls toy line, and of course you will be hanging out in some of the available Bratz sets (like the Bratz Shopping mall, for instance).

The Bratz Rock Angelz video game starts with the girls in the school, but soon they are traveling the entire world, looking for the perfect interview to a cool celebrity or finding the perfect news story.

The Bratz Rock Angelz video game is available on a PC-compatible CD-ROM, and it is priced about 20 dollars. The Nintendo Gamecube version costs about 40 dollars, about the same price of the Bratz Rock Angelz video game for the PlayStation 2 console. There is also a Game Boy Advance version, which costs about 30 dollars, and comes with a cool gift: the free "Chloe Game Boy Advance carry-case."

How to Make a Pillow Case Cheap and Easy From Standard to Designer

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Have you bought any sheets sets lately? I have and they cost a ton of money. Who would have thought the average person would have to work a half a week to buy a good set of sheets? And than when we buy sheets we never get enough pillow cases. So we have to buy extra and we are than spending a lot more money. In this days economy it is all about saving money and I have a few tips for you.

I do not know why these cases are so expensive because they are just about the easiest thing a person can make themselves. You do not need a pattern, so that saves $5.00 to $16.00 right there.

How to sew a the case

Tips:

1 - When a sheet wares out it is usually in the center, the ends are still strong and has many years of use left. You can use these ends for a pair of cases.

2 - When buying a new set of sheets, rather than buy extra packs of the cases, buy a single sheet in the same or contrasting color. You can make 4 pillow cases out of one single sheet.

3 - Watch the clearance bins, often they will have flat sheets that have no mating fitted sheets so they put them on clearance to move them out. These would make you perfect pillow cases.

4 - Make your own designer pillow cases for gifts. Weddings and a house warming are perfect examples for these special handmade gifts. You can make plain or create designer cases with very little effort and cost.

Finished case sizes are:

Standard 21 X 32
Queen 21 X 36
King 21 X 42

How to make a pillow case instructions:

Cut your fabric 6 inches longer than the pillow you are going to use and 1 inch wider. If you are making a standard you will cut a piece 27 X 38. Turn bottom up 1/4 inch and press. Than turn up a 5 3/4 inch hem, sew.

If you have a serger it is a great time to use it sewing up the side and across the top of the pillow case. If not than use a straight stitch and than zig zag along the edge to keep from raveling. Turn right side out and press.

That is it, that is all there is to making a pillow case. These directions are for a basic one color or print sheet. You could have it make in 30 minutes. Make up sets to go with your decor and to use for gifts. Quick, easy and so very economical.

Buying Handmade Toys

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Toys are adored both by children and by adults. Children play with toys to enhance their physical and mental skills while adults buy them to add to their collections. In the past, handmade toys are very popular. Every little girl has her own stitched doll while every young boy plays with wooden horses and boats. But as time passed, handmade toys slowly lose their popularity; and ever since the introduction of Barbie in the 1950s, these toys have disappeared from the limelight.

Fortunately, there are still several artisans who continue to produce handmade toy cars for boys and handmade dolls for girls. The industry of handmade products has thrived once more when people realized the harmful effects of commercial products to the environment. However, in 2007, many toys were proven to contain hazardous substances. That is why the CPSIA or the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 created a rigorous set of documentation and testing requirements for the manufacturers of children's products. This means that sellers of handmade toys are supposed to pay $300 to $4,000 for the testing process of each toy. Of course, such price is too much for a small-time toymaker to handle. So as a result, most stores selling handmade toy cars and dolls were forced to close down.

Then again, the industry of handmade products did not die. Well, it will not die if we continue supporting it. Handmade toy cars can still be bought, but there are certain considerations that you have to make when buying these items. For instance, you need to have a good look at the toy that you want to buy. Pick it up from the shelf and scrutinize it. Make sure that it does not have any sharp edges or sharp things that stick out of it. If you are buying handmade toy cars made of wood, see to it that there are no wood splinters. You must also ensure that the toy does not contain small or detachable parts that children might swallow. Furthermore, ask the seller if they comply with the law and if the toys they sell are non-toxic.

Buying handmade toys is really great. If you buy one, you get to help save the environment. These toys are made using natural materials, and they did not come from factories that emit toxic substances. You also get to support the livelihood of artisans and simple people who sell these products. In addition, you get to avoid crowds and long queues in department stores and expensive toy stores. Handcrafted toys are also long-lasting, durable, and more honestly made. They are also safer and more original. If you buy toy cars, you get the feeling that they are made with utmost care especially for you.

Barbie Dolls - Where Did They Come From?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

"Dear Santa, Please can I have a Barbie doll for Christmas?" Barbie dolls have probably been on Christmas wish lists for several generations of girls. In fact Barbie has become a household name for many years. Who created the first concept of the Barbie doll?

The story started with the birth of Ruth Mosko in Denver Colarado in 1916. Ruth married Elliot Handler in 1938. Elliot Handler and his business partner Harold 'Matt" Matson formed the company Mattel. The name was created by a combination of their names 'Matt-Ell". Mattel originally manufactured picture frames, but after making dolls furniture from scraps decided to focus on toy manufacturing for which Mattel is now famous.

Ruth Handler noticed that her young daughter Barbara was more interested in playing with adult dolls, than the baby dolls that were available at that time. While traveling in Europe she saw a German doll called 'Lilli' which she bought for her daughter. The original 'Lilli' doll was not a children's toy, but a joke style gift for men.

Mattel bought the marketing rights for 'Lilli'. They changed the doll's name to Barbie, named after Ruth's daughter Barbara. Barbie was first released for sale in the United States in 1959 and became a hot seller. Barbie's boyfriend 'Ken' was introduced in 1960. Ken was named after Ruth's son Kenneth.

The Barbie doll was first displayed at the New York International American Toy Fair on March 9, 1959. This date became Barbie's official birthday. There is now a fictional biography of the life of 'Barbie' with additional family and friends created and sold as separate dolls.

My Kids Toys

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Toys, like childhood itself, mean different things to different people. To the average European or American parent, a toy serves to keep the young amused and distracted. Now more than ever, with the belief that multiple intelligences can be stimulated in the early years, toy manufacturers are gearing their products towards those than can keep children beguiled, occupied and instructed. For instance, toys should help the child develop his motor skills, and engage him in fantasy and investigative play.

For the child, an ornate piece that to adult eyes is essentially decorative and fixed, or a mechanized object kept as a curiosity can count as a plaything. As a result, experts have classified many objects as being on the borderline between toy and decorative object, between puerile replica and collector's item. Such overlapping cannot be sidestepped nowadays, especially since toy collecting by adults in the United States and some European countries has emerged as a popular form of expertise.

Despite such borderline cases, there is wide consensus among toy historians and collectors on what truly makes a toy, a toy in the strictest sense. Boys have played with foot soldiers and horse soldiers. Girls have always had their precious dolls. Although the earliest of these toys have not survived, these remain true and had been so since the third millennium B.C.

The earliest known dolls were made of various materials such as wood, terra-cotta and fabric. The period after World War II brought novelties in design and an entire new range of plastics.

Mechanical toys became popular as class alignments changed. This fact, coupled with more ingenious manufacturing techniques evolved into fantastic musical automata, animals, and images that utilized clockwork to mimic human movement. The aim for toy makers has been towards movement and the many different methods of inducing it in toys. It has assumed great importance and had become a subject dealt with fully in specialized reference works.

Because of new production techniques, an overwhelming quantity of toys, games and amusements for children had been available by the mid 19th century. German inventiveness pioneered novel and intriguing designs, ranging from simple knickknacks in tin or the softwoods, which were known in Britain as "penny toys", to constructional and educational games that reflected the growing vogue of science in the nursery.

English girls during the reign of reign of Queen Victoria, began to follow the customs of their German and Austrian counterparts by learning about housecraft and baby care. By the turn of the 20th century, it was not unusual to find inexpensive dolls, dolls' houses, and "German kitchens" in middle-class family homes.

Today, the spread of modern production techniques has made additional millions of persons more conscious of toys in respect to their function, design and usefulness, and their many cultural aspects as well. And although refinements in the application of radio, electronics, magnetism, dry-cell batteries, and so on, have revolutionized certain toys, the folktoy has come into its own again in India, China, Central Europe, Japan, Mexico, Russia and Scandinavia, thus balancing mechanized trends with the addition of less complex technical artistry and beauty.

The Shape of the Humble Egg Can Key Pleasing Product Design

Image : http://www.flickr.com

I have written often about the overwhelming importance of design in successfully differentiating and branding products. We all know examples of well-designed products that become standards. The Ferrari sports car, the Rolex watch, the Barbie Doll, a Krups toaster or the PEZ candy dispenser are obvious examples of packaging, or product design that become ubiquitous to consumers around the world. When the rare Ferrari Testarossa roars by on the highway, we instantly know that the "yellow prancing horse" badge sits proudly and desirably on the world's most exotically styled automobile.

One of the most famous industrial designers of the 20th century was Raymond Loewy. Born in France, Mr. Loewy became the designer of choice for manufacturers of consumable and non-consumable consumer products, industrial transport and corporate logo's as a result of the simple design cues that he often built his products around. Visitors to the Loewy shop often noted that there was a bowl of eggs prominently placed in his office. Eggs were a real creative prop for all of Loewy's associates. They were not on hand to be deviled and eaten.

Raymond Loewy felt that the egg was nature's perfect shape. The egg is oval, circular, oblong, smooth, white, and a peculiar combination of strong and brittle. No other shape is so compelling. When viewed it is pleasing, when held it is comforting. He made every effort to utilize the splendid inherent design features of the egg in his industrial design work. The simplicity of the shape became identifiable in "Loewy product designs".

A list of the famous products, packages and corporate logo's that Loewy crafted during his long career is an amazing valediction of his creativity and range. The following is a list of a few of the works of Raymond Loewy:

* Gestetner Mimeograph Machine
* Pennsylvania Rail Road Locomotives
* Schick Electric Razor
* IBM Key Punch
* Coca Cola Bottle and Logo
* Lucky Strike Cigarettes Logo
* Leisurama Homes
* New York City Transit Train R40 Car
* NASA Sky Lab Interior
* Exxon Logo
* Shell Oil Logo
* Studebaker Avanti & Commander Auto
* Frigidaire
* Panama Line Cruise Ship Interiors
* Wahl Eversharp Fountain Pen
* International Harvester Logo
* Dorsett Catalina Pleasure Boat
* Zippo Lighter
* Sears Cold Spot Refrigerator
* Huppmobile Auto's
* 1947 Filben Jukebox
* Greyhound Scenicruiser Bus

This is an impressive list and many of these products are considered timeless and cutting edge to this day. Motor Trend and Car & Driver Magazine list the Studebaker Commander as among the most beautifully designed cars of the 1950's. Loewy designed locomotives of the 1940's are treated as classic art by railway buffs. In almost every one of these designs the styling cues taken from the egg are visible to even the most untrained eye. Industrial design students study Loewy crafted products just as art students study Rembrandt or Picasso.

Companies and entrepreneurs that revere and diligently work for highly stylized designs are much more likely to succeed in both the short and long run. Consider Ralph Lauren's Polo lines of clothing. The attention to detail, design, quality and manic maintenance of the brand as a lifestyle product has established Polo as a classic, decade after decade. Calvin Klein clothing enjoys a similar status based on the brands positioning as cutting edge, urban styling. The Benetton brand, on the other hand, was immensely successful in the 1980's. However, the Company did not maintain its design creativity and has largely been in decline.

Of course today, the automobile industry is being roiled by production overcapacity issues, a global credit crisis and high fuel prices. In no industry is design as crucial as in the car business. And yet, it is almost impossible to differentiate one car from another on modern roads. The success of BMW's Mini, the new Volkswagen Beetle, the Cadillac CTS, the Mazda Miata and the Buick Enclave are due almost entirely to their unique, sleek body styles. They are nowhere near the cheapest vehicles in their categories. They simply scream "cool, buy me"! Why do so many other car manufacturers not take note of the importance of differentiating, compelling design features when producing box-like, indifferent, cookie cutter travel conveyances totally lacking in special personality.

Every aspect of a products design and presentation is crucial to creating a strong, lasting brand identity in the target consumers mind. The logo must reflect the features, benefits and positioning that is unique to a product. The packaging must stand up to the competition and support the branding message being conveyed. The products logo, iconography, colors, printing fonts and package copy must be married to the container and the contents of the product itself. Well designed products seem natural, seamless. They draw the eye. They do not attack the senses.

Raymond Loewy's use of the egg as a favored creative prop is a clever device that can easily be copied. The egg would seem, as a basic foodstuff, not to offer much for industrial designers by way of providing inspiration. Nevertheless, Loewy had an eye for simple, elegant styling and saw unique art properties in the shape of the egg. These he utilized fully and created his own unique design style. The potential to replicate this use of naturally occurring or man-made design features is omnipresent. The successful new product will incorporate the best possible creative devices borrowed from wherever they can be harvested.

Top 10 Bad Housewarming Gift Ideas

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Looking for housewarming gift ideas? Are you stumped trying to think of the perfect gift to give your friend the new home owner? Well this is not that, but do not stop reading now. This a list of the top 10 things that you should not give as house warming presents.

Number 10-- Novelty lighting! Be it a lamp, a candle or a night light; novelty lighting is just not a good idea. I once was given a pink flamingo night light. Sadly, I am not kidding. It was hideous, and I had no idea what to do with it. I ended up giving it as a white elephant present at a Christmas party. If you are considering giving a piece of lighting that makes you giggle, just refrain.

Number 9--Regifting bad gifts that you have received in the past. I know we have probably all been guilty of doing this in the past, but it really is not a good idea. One resifting story is too awful to tell. A mother-in-law gave her new daughter-in-law a set of kitchen glasses for her new house. Only they were not new. In fact they already belonged to the daughter. Her husband had stored them in his mother's garage until he and his new bride could move into their new home! The moral of the story: don't re-gift presents, especially if you can't remember where it came from.

Number 8--Barbie doll toilet paper cozy. You have seen them at garage sales, craft fairs, and perhaps on the back of your grandmother's toilet. It is that slightly creepy, Barbie doll whose legs sit inside the roll of toilet paper, her usually crocheted skirt hiding the spare TP roll.

Number 7- Sports team memorabilia. No matter how big of a Braves fan your friend is, I doubt that he, or his wife for that matter, would appreciate a throw blanket sporting their favorite teams logo, or a framed poster of his favorite player. It sounds good, but where would they put it?

Number 6--Novelty drinking glasses or beer coozies. Does anyone really need a complete set of Shrek glasses from McDonalds? Or fish face beer coozies? You know a good rule of thumb is that if it has the word novelty in the description, don't buy it!

Number 5--Taxidermied animal. Now I hope this one speaks for itself, but just in case you're considering buying a gag jackelope or a stuffed moose head, DON'T!

Number 4-- Mounted, talking animals. We've all seen them in the store or on tv. The hilarious bass that sings and dances. This one goes into the same category as number 5. Please have a little more restraint. It sounds funny, but in reality it's not.

Number 3-- Live animals. As sweet as a new puppy or kitten may seem; they don't make the best housewarming gift. Pets as presents seem like a great idea, but the logistics of owning a pet came be very tricky. And many times they can wreak havoc on a new home. So pass by the box of free kittens outside of Walmart, because you just might lose your friend over it.

Number 2-- An Ashtray for a nonsmoker. I would hope that no one would actually do this, but I heard a story once of a mother-in-law giving an ashtray to her new daughter-in-law. Unfortunately the daughter-in-law didn't smoke, and all she could think was that her new mother-in-law was plotting for her early demise.

And the Number 1 bad housewarming gift-- cleaning supplies. Now many of you may think that cleaning supplies would be a good gift, and in theory it would be. The problem is the message that this kind of gift sends. Something like, "Here's a vacuum cleaner, because you clearly don't spend enough time on your domestic responsibilities. Women especially can take offence at such an offering. So unless it is a requested item, skip the cleaning supplies.

Various Types of Doll Houses

Image : http://www.flickr.com

There are various types of dollhouses that one can collect. They can range from old, historical architectural designs up to the latest and modern contemporary homes that we see in cities like Los Angeles, Tokyo, London and Manila. There is no certain type of dollhouse if we try to really think about it. Everything is up to you. It's pretty much like designing or choosing your own house.

If you're a beginner to the intriguing world of dollhouse, take some needed time to do some research and preparations before hitting it off. Becoming a knowledgeable collector or hobbyist may make a huge difference in which sort of dollhouse you pick. Try to avoid making decisions based on factors such as price tags or investment value. It should be about what you enjoy the most. It's about your self-expression.

General Overview

A popular type of dollhouse is the so called Victorian dollhouse. These houses are similar to what you would find in a city like Paris. Usually, these houses are having extensive structures with great features such as a huge front veranda. Decorating a Victorian dollhouse should not be a problem given the many amazing ways by which to do so. It's not difficult to find internet stores and sites dedicated exclusively to the Victorian style doll house and the various decors that one can obtain for them. It's also very easy to construct an ideal Victorian house from another age.

Some dollhouse collectors particularly value the classic, homely style of a Tudor hut. This type of doll house represents the English architecture. It has a traditional post fence that provides a family atmosphere or feeling. Facilities like a fireplace or a twisting stairway are common in this type of doll house. Most Tudor huts or cottages are custom-made or personally crafted by the collector. However, there are also readily available products out in the market.

On the other hand, Georgian doll houses are the most popular variety that is made of wood and the one you will always encounter. This type of dollhouse is popular because it is usually big and striking. The Georgian period is commonly associated with the neoclassical style and was greatly influenced by classical architectural designs. The Georgian Dollhouses have three major classification or themes. They are: Greece and Rome, Terraces and Town Houses, and Palladianism and Country Houses.

Palladianism was a school of thought in the area of design based on the works and writings of an architect from Italy who wanted to restore the techniques and designs of olden Roman buildings. Palladian style includes elegance, aesthetic understanding of ornamental elements and the use of order in an art form. A Georgian doll house as opposed to a Victorian house is more organized and orderly in terms of colors, details and overall architectural value.

During the 1700s, the wealthy Westerners began to pour investments into their homes. Country houses started to emerge, consuming vast areas of land for landscaping and parks. If you desire an imposing mansion dolls house, you could take it on a Georgian era. There are quite a few styles of Palladian door obtainable in miniature and you can acquire windows to complement. The fashion of these doors and windows provide Georgian wooden doll houses a very splendid atmosphere.

Finally, one very enjoyable and well-liked dollhouse is the Barbie dollhouse. By the name itself, it is made particularly for Barbies. It gives so much fun for children who enjoy Barbie and her many accessories. There is an unlimited array of things to put inside a Barbie dollhouse. From furniture like sofa sets and beds to soap and dishes, creating a Barbie dream home and a Barbie dream personality has become entertaining for females (and even males) of all ages. Since it doesn't always have to be for the kids, playing with a Barbie house makes collections so cool. This hobby becomes timeless and irrelevant of age.

Dollhouses made for miniatures are more and more becoming popular. There are even museums devoted to miniatures and dollhouses. Miniatures are little models of standard everyday houses and the things that go inside them. Some people spend so much time and effort to furnish their miniature dollhouses as realistically as possible. Things which are actually everything one can necessitate for daily living can be found for miniature houses.

Regardless of all of the great varieties and amazing types of dollhouses custom-made for collecting, some hobbyists would rather be specially original and innovative by constructing their very own dollhouse. This is the only way to have an exclusive design all your own. It doesn't really require a lot to construct a dollhouse. Most people start by choosing the type of house. Whether classic architecture or modern designs, it's all up to you. Planning it out with a draft then getting all the materials needed is the starting point. Helpful tips and guides can be found with a quick search of the web. Whatever type of dollhouse you prefer, it's important that you enjoy it and you can express yourself through it.

Dora the Explorer to Dora Links Fashion Doll - Our Little Explorer Grows Up

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Dora the Explorer grows up and is getting a "new look" in the soon to be released Dora Links Fashion Doll. Can we still call her Explorer? You all know Diego's cousin...she is a young explorer full of spark and energy and she loves a good adventure. She is a kind, exciting, bilingual preschooler. She enjoys adventures and shares them with her friends, Boots Back Pack and sometimes her cousin Diego, the star of Go Diego Go. We have all enjoyed her show for years on Nick.

Wait...that describes the Old Dora...the one we knew and loved. As her audience ages, her parent company wants to keep up with her fans as they grow by making her older too! As with all of us, time has passed and our sweet little explorer has grown up...The Explorer is now a tween and we will see her new look this fall when Nickelodeon and Mattel introduce us to her new line and virtual world. Living in the city and going to middle school, it seems our explorer has grown into a Diva Girl...who likes to do tweenaged things like shop, wear jewelry and she is now into fashion. There's even going to be a virtual Dora Links web world where we can hang out...just like with Webkinz, Neopets, Littlest Pet Shop Pets and the other very popular virtual world toys we have become familiar with. I guess this Virtual Shopping Explorer will have secret codes, code cheats, games and possibly some favorite tween secret recipes too!

There is no mention of Dora's friends...You know the gang...Boots the Monkey...Swiper the Fox...Fiesta Trio...Backpack and Map...Isa...Tico and Benny the Bull. Since most of these characters are not city animals...it makes me think they won't be included in this new world, but since it's virtual, there might be a park in it for them. And I don't know that Backpack and Map won't be traded for Purse, Cel Phone and GPS! I'm just guessing of course, but it does make sense.

It makes us all wonder what the new grown up Links Fashion Doll will be like...will she be the same adventurous soul we knew and loved as a child? Of course, we certainly all hope we can recognize the old Spirit in this new grown up form. It's not likely that such a spirited soul could totally disappear into a shrieking, shopping Teen Princess...is it? Nick and Mattel tell us that Tween Dora will still solve mysteries, let's hope it's not where to find the shiniest glitter eye shadow or the most exciting goth halloween costume!

With your new Dora Links Fashion Doll you can hook her up to your computer, and when you change her look virtually, you change your doll's look in the real world too. How do they do that? This Magical world can change her hair, eyes...and more. When you visit this "Virtual World" it will be a Webkinz World kind of experience for tween girls. Girls will be able to explore, earn virtual money and be challenged by mysteries which will be introduced to you online. There is even an alert you will receive to notify you when a new mystery has been released. The company is marketing this new Dora at girls aged 5 and up...and it will probably retail at 59.00 each...will this doll pass our initial inspection? Most likely, her virtual world sounds really cool, and I imagine this older explorer doll will have quite a Webkinz like following among the soon to be Tweenaged girls. Bottom line, unless some information sneaks out, we will all have to wait for the release of this new Tween Dora Links Fashion Doll. We all will just have to wait and see if we like the new version of our favorite Explorer as much as we like the younger version we all are used to.

Barbie Doll - The Perfect Figure?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

While no one will argue with the popularity of Mattel's Barbie Doll, one area that has raised its fair share of controversy over the years is her figure.

Many parents from around the world have argued that Barbie's ultra-slim figure represents a ridiculous standard for a body shape. They say that many girls grow up thinking that they must have the same figure as Barbie or there is something wrong with them. While I don't take that radical of a stance, I will say that it would be quite difficult to measure up to Barbie's standards.

If you take the measurements of Barbie, she would be over 7 feet tall, weigh around 125 pounds, and have a shape of 32-20-42. Of course, no woman could maintain a figure like that, but this is where the controversy stems.

In addition, Barbie has a very long neck. In fact, her neck is nearly twice the size of the average woman. Her feet are also another source of criticism with many saying that Barbie's feet are only half the size of a normal womans due to foot binding. That is the practice of preventing your feet from growing by constricting them.

Some have went as far as saying that the Barbie doll has caused their children to become anorexic from trying to maintain Barbie's figure. I think that may be a little extreme, but I can see both sides.

In recent years, Mattel has given in a little bit on this issue and widened Barbie's waist a bit. This took place around the year 2000. Barbie now has a more proportioned waist.

Regardless of what Barbie's figure looks like, or who is right or wrong on this issue, the real winner in this debate is Mattel. The added controversy and publicity only helps to fuel sales. I wonder why no one talks about Ken's figure?

Games For Girls

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Who says that the world of technology that revolves around the World Wide Web is only for the boys? Well, considering the number of female online gamers, many girls are finding themselves deeply involved in the virtual world of gaming online. The latest craze in the list of these online girly games is the games that allow dressing up the popular characters like those from Bratz and Barbie.

Another zing in the wing of games is the avatar Sue, which is fast gaining popularity across the world. Not only can girls indulge in Sue's makeover of wardrobe, hairdo and looks but also, enjoy other games as well. These extolling wonders of creativity and fashion can be saved as artworks on different fun portals like Facebook etc.

The sensational dolls which are gaining popularity as the fashion icon among girls are the dazzling characters of Brats. There are many games which allow the girls to choose clothes and accessories for the Bratz Dolls according to their moods. Some of the games also offer makeover challenges where the girls from all over the world can compete to test their fashion abilities. Some of the Bratz games are also designed similar to video games strategy that involves a certain mission or objective to be accomplished. By finishing the tasks of the game one is able to earn points to obtain the items required to take the game to a further level.

Gone are the days when games were limited to card games, scrabble or monopoly, in today's era realizing the market of the girl gamers, manufacturers have produced a number of games with which girls can better associate. One point to take into consideration is that most of these games are fantasy focused, based on novels, comics etc. which provide an effective tool of recreation for the girls.

One example of such games is that of Barbie Games. Girls want to know everything about Barbie; where she is planning her summer, when is her next date and with whom. Barbie has managed to remain a girl's best friend for more than four decades now and is still a favorite all over the world. This is the reason why most of the Barbie games have managed to remain the most sought after among the girls till date. Dressing Barbie is a serious drill which involves selecting the most sophisticated outfits to adorn the doll with, which can later be printed out to complete one's collection of paper Barbie dolls.

However, one thing to notice is that while boys fight for points and take interest in strategy based games, girls like to adorn their land of fantasies and play not to win or lose but simply, to have fun and enjoy the experience to its best.

Hands On - Gestures in Declamation

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Every time I watch a Declamation round, I am reminded that hand gestures are fascinating. They can be extremely powerful, and many times they convey more than words can express - consider the scenes in the movie "Mr. Holland's Opus" with American Sign Language. Even everyday usage of gestures combined with speech is meaningful; a wave hello is very different from a wave goodbye. And the meanings even vary by region - did you know that giving someone a thumbs-up in some countries is a major insult?

That said, Declamation is an event that focuses on qualities that are basic elements of giving a speech, including volume, clarity, posture, confidence, memorization, adherence to author's intent, and of course, quality and interpretation of hand gestures.

This post isn't exactly a guide, more of a list of observations. Here are some moves I've seen in Declamation (I've given them easy-to-remember names for your convenience. No need to thank me).

The Fist: Make a fist with one hand (or both hands) and hold your arm (or arms) in front of you while you speak. This is a good hand gesture to use when you're making a passionate point or talking about something that deals with strength, power, or a serious subject you really want your audience to take home. Try not to overuse this gesture, though, or you will come across like a boxer.

The Bill Clinton: Make a fist with one hand, but keep one thumb raised, like you're giving someone a thumbs-up. Keep your elbow close to your side, but extend your forearm out in front of you. Move your arm forward slightly when you are emphasizing a point, and allow your other arm to rest at your side.

The Hustle: Though rarely seen in competition, this is what happens when a declamation speaker moves both hands around each other in a circle, as if doing the hustle. Both hands are usually relaxed. This happens often when explaining something that's taking a long time to get to the point. Better solution: take some time to cut the unnecessary explanation out of your piece.

The Barbie And Ken: Keep both of your elbows close to your sides, but extend both forearms out in front of you with your palms facing slightly upward, like you are welcoming someone or offering a hug. Both hands should be very stiff. Keep your thumb separated from your other fingers, but keep your fingers close, like they are attached. Think of a Barbie doll...or a lobster. So, this one could be called The Barbie And Ken And Lobster, I guess...

The Robot: Similar to The Barbie And Ken And Lobster, this involves keeping the hands stiff, but only uses one arm. For The Robot, allow both hands to hang at your sides. Then, raise one hand abruptly, keeping your elbow at your side. Repeat this mechanical motion throughout your piece, never deviating from your programming.

The Chef: This is a variation on The Robot in which you gesture only with one hand, keeping your fingers stiff - but for this one, make a chopping motion, like your hand is a knife and you are chopping a head of lettuce in half. This is for emphasizing a point.

The Stop And Think About This: Usually used for the crux/climax of the piece, this is when you take both hands and put them in front of you, with your fingers pointing toward the ceiling and with both palms facing away from you. This indicates you have reached a point in your piece where your audience is absolutely required to pay attention.

The Pointer: With both hands, gesture while pointing with both of your index fingers.

The Gun Show: Make a fist with your hand, then extend only your thumb and index finger, making a "gun" out of your hand. This is usually done with both hands while pointing at an audience member to express that you are speaking to them directly.

The Non-Gesture: This is what happens when a competitor does not gesture during a speech, keeping both hands at his or her sides throughout the recitation. I will offer up one piece of advice in this post: Don't do this; it is very boring to watch and I'd be willing to bet the original speech-giver at least or something.

Never underestimate the power of your hands; they can be used to emphasize a point, to show that you've want someone to stop and think, to show that are raising the roof, or to express that you come in peace. Use them well.

OOPS! Did I Forget the Free Fun?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

In my recent article "Kids Just Wanna Have Fun" I offered some ideas to keep your fun hungry kids happy. But, duhhhhh. . .I forgot the FREE FUN STUFF! Well ya' know that's the most important stuff. I don't know where my mind was that day!

So, now that I've seen the error of my ways, Let me share some more great activities we sometimes forget about as we get older. These timeless activities have been around for ages. Things that we enjoyed as kids are still fun for kids today. Even in an electronic society!

If you have kids, most likely you have a box of crayons somewhere. I hate to admit it but I still love to color! Come on, give it a try no matter how old you are. I have found that it is contagious. Even if your kids think they are "too old" for coloring, you will be surprised how quickly they join in when they see you enjoying it! Go ahead, it works every time.

Silly putty is another fun activity that we tend to think e're "too old" for. But the older you get the more creative ideas you have and the more silly fun you can have. So come on, get your creative juices flowing.

Hey ladies, and maybe some of you gents too, do you remember paper dolls? I had almost forgotten they existed until one Christmas I came across a paper doll kit in a craft store. Suddenly, I remembered the hours and hours of fun I had playing with these simple toys. And, they are so much easier to dress than Barbie. Sorry Barbie.

There are literally thousands of craft ideas that can keep you busy for hours or days. Crafts come in all different levels of difficulty. So find one that suits everyone in the family and work on it together. Hmmmm, could this mean more conversation time! Take advantage of these fun times together. Get to know your kids better.

You can also choose a variety of different level crafts to suit everyone and work on different crafts all at once. Either way, you're accomplishing several things at once......

Children LEARN through creating.

You'll be keeping that FUN meter up, keeping them from getting bored.

You'll be SAVING MOMEY on outings by finding creative ways to have fun at home.

You'll have more "QUALITY TIME" to get to really know your kids!

Need some ideas? Just visit your local craft stores or do a search online. Check out FamilyFun.com for some super ideas for having creative fun with the family. You'll find arts and crafts, party and game ideas, parenting help, recipes, and even travel ideas.

If you're into quilting, sewing, knitting, crocheting........well if you are, you know the possibilities here. It's not just for "old folks"! Get the kids involved. There are kits created for these activities. Kits created specifically to get children interested and having fun doing these activities.

There are so many wonderful ideas for crafting the possibilities are mind blowing. One walk around your local craft store and I'll bet you can come up with a craft idea for each week of the year, at least, if not two or three per week! Take a pen and paper. There's so much to take in!

Crafts for painting, sewing, candle making, transfers and art supplies that personalize items (purses, shirts, bandanas, jewelry, tote bags ..etc.), drawing, knitting, quilting, doll making, puzzles, woodworking, scrap booking........well I could go on and on. But, best thing for you to do is get on down to that craft store and get some ideas.

Please, don't buy everything you see! JUST GET IDEAS. Keep a notepad of ideas and then remember to look for arts and crafts supplies in your thrift stores, consignment shops, and at yard sales.

Oh, and don't forget to recycle items you might normally trash. Keeping a good supply of these items will help keep expenses down. Things like, scraps of fabric, ribbon, paper, egg cartons, coffee cans (all sizes), Styrofoam (packing pieces or sheets) wrapping paper scraps, buttons, toilet paper and paper towel tubes. Don't throw away anything that you could possibly use in a craft project. Don't get carried away though. Never keep more than you have room to store comfortably.

Seriously people, HAVE FUN WITH YOUR KIDS! They won't be kids forever, and believe it or not....You WILL miss them when they're all grown up and out the door!

Not only little girls like to play with Barbie dolls. Some people collect them, and display them. Barbie collector dolls are manufactured for purposes other than the regular Barbie dolls.

The Barbie holiday doll is manufactured in limited amounts. They are only sold at the end of the year and are made more valuable because you find they are sometimes dressed by famous designers like Yves Saint Laurent, Oscar De La Renta and so on.

The hairstyles make up, and even the slanted elongated eyes are captured. Even the careers of the times, are captured and some of the Barbie collector dolls represent them. at that time, they were air hostesses, secretaries, fashion models, actresses and even homemakers.

Fun and Profit Collecting Barbies

Image : http://www.flickr.com

One of the most popular collector's items is dolls. Collectible dolls can range from antique dolls to modern collectible dolls. If you are interested in collecting dolls, it would be a good idea to focus on a particular type of collectible doll.

Certainly one of the most rewarding and exciting is collectible Barbie dolls. Barbies have become extremely popular since they first came out in 1959. What little girl is there that doesn't own at least one Barbie. The value of collectible Barbies is quite high, so much so, that today there are even Barbies that can be specially designed according to collectors' needs.

People Who Collect Barbies

While every little girl owns a Barbie, most of them do not collect them. Let's face it, the fun of a Barbie is dressing her and doing her hair for those dates with Ken, but the price for this fun is that the monetary value of the doll is shot.

Most of the people who actually collect Barbies are adults. It is believed that there are well over a hundred thousand adults that own these wonderful collectible dolls. Nearly all these adults are women, and about ten percent of Barbie collectors are male. Furthermore, the women that own such collections are statistically usually in their forties, and purchase an average of twenty such dolls each year, sometimes spending about a thousand or more dollars in the process.

How to Collect Barbies

Rule Number One: Keep It in the Box

If you wish to maintain the value of your collectible Barbies, you must leave them in their boxes. Part of the value of a Barbie is the original box; therefore most experienced collectors do not ever remove their collectible Barbies from their boxes. The value of collectible Barbies can depreciate by as much fifty percent if they are taken out of their boxes.

As a collector of Barbie dolls you have a choice to make about whether to take the doll out of its box to enjoy while losing out on value, or simply console yourself that the doll in its box is beautiful and will maintain its value even though you will not get a chance to touch and play with it. However, you can buy a collectible Barbie doll packaged in a lift-off box, so you can still enjoy playing with and feeling your Barbie. In this way it will still look great while it retains its value as a collectible.

Rule Number Two: Ask An Expert

Finding collectible Barbies is not a difficult task, but getting to know the value of your collection can require a bit of effort. Before you are able to accurately judge the value of collectible Barbies, you may need to ask an expert or read up on the literature pertaining to collectible Barbie dolls. If you are new to this activity, be sure to realize that there are a number of sources for you to tap into in your quest for information on collectible Barbie dolls.

There are two classes of collectible Barbie, vintage and modern. Vintage dolls are those produced from 1959 to the early eighties; modern dolls are produced from the mid-eighties on. Both classes have collectible value.

The value of your Barbie can depend on several factors. For example, if you look on eBay, the price can vary according to who is selling the Barbie (if it is a reputable dealer the price will be more), also on the photograph of the doll, and the spending power of the purchaser. Evaluating the current value of collectible Barbies can be a bit confusing. You will find that a Barbie gift set in perfect condition can fetch anything from one hundred thirty dollars to two hundred fifty five dollars.

What Styles of Barbies to Collect

Most collectors who collect Barbies because of their value will gravitate towards Label dolls. These pieces have very detailed attention paid to clothes and accessories. The Platinum Label doll is produced in limited editions that do not exceed a thousand such dolls, and are sometimes only found in a specific retail shop. The White Chocolate Obsession Barbie Doll is a wonderful example of such a collectible doll, and the name refers to the scent of white chocolate that exudes from the doll's hair. Other similar collectible Barbies include Faerie Queen, Badgley Mischka Bride Barbie, as well as the very restricted Nurse Barbie doll that has been designed by Robert Best.

However, Barbie dolls are so popular that they are also made based on TV shows, movies, and famous personalities. Collectors find them appealing, and the value of these popular Barbies will often appreciate. When considering collectible Barbies, these are perhaps the type of collectible Barbie doll that will come to mind first.

There are many elements to consider when collecting Barbies, so it is important that your first and foremost consideration is how well you like a particular Barbie. For most collectors the fun is in the owning and enjoying of a special Barbie, and if it happens to become valuable, so much the better.

Barbie Dolls - History and Facts

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The Barbie doll phenomenon began in 1959 when Barbie was introduced at the New York Toy fair. Then began a great success story in the history of doll manufacturing. Barbie was the first adult doll figure to be mass produced. Before this nearly all dolls were modelled after babies or children. "New for '59,The Barbie Doll:A Shapely Teenage Fashion Model Price $3.00" was her intitial billing.

In 1945 Elliot and Ruth Handler formed a partnership with Harold Matson to manufacture picture frames. The two names Matson and Elliot were combined to form the company name Mattel. Elliot used the picture frame wood scrap to make doll house furniture. This was the start of the Handler furniture business.

About this time Ruth noticed that her daughter Barbara and friends preferred to play with adult paper dolls rather than child or baby dolls. The girls preferred a doll which could be their role model when they grew up. Ruth realised that there could be big commercial possibilities in the adult doll market. She discussed the idea with her husband but he felt that it would be too expensive to start making the dolls.

Soon after this Ruth made a trip to Germany and purchased a doll called Lilli. This adult type doll was based on a German comic strip. On returning to the USA she began work to redesign the doll working with a doll clothes designer. Soon the Barbie doll was born and was named after Ruth's daughter Barbara. The doll was patented by Mattel in 1958 and introduced in 1959. She was to become one of the most well known and well loved toys ever made.

Barbie soon became a collectors doll and was avidly sought after by adult collectors. Between 1959 and 1972 Barbie underwent seven changes in her appearance and design. These Barbies made up to 1972 are recognised as vintage collectible dolls by their fans and are eagerly sought after. The 1959 Barbie doll in mint condition will sell for thousands of dollars. Some have sold for as much as $8000 to $10,000 but you can buy them for much less and $2000 to $3000 is quite common. Later editions fetch proportionately less. Dolls made in the 1969 to 1972 period can often be bought for a few dollars. Garage sales and flea markets are still the source of a few early dolls. About 300,000 of the 1959 Barbie were made and there are undoubtedly many out there still undiscovered.
